Teaching Kids to Write

My twins started the "big school' this year as Pre-Kinders and I was a little worried when I found out that the school (or level) they are in practices free hand writing. When I was little, I remember starting with short straight lines, slanted, horizontal and vertical and shapes that included circles, half circles, triangles, rectangles, wavy and zigzag dotted lines.

But this time when my girls went home with their homework, it said "Sound and copy the letters 3x." without guides or dotted lines. We helped the girls write by holding their hands and showing them how to write them. I would though prefer them writing on their own, practicing the strokes without us having to hold their writing hands.

So on to the world wide web I go, searching for templates and found thousands on Google and Pinterest. And I have here my favorites, straight and wavy lines and the letters of the alphabet. I printed these and they practice three times a week. Apart from these, the girls practice writing one letter and one number daily. It's like they have a "Letter or Number of the Day" that they focus on. There has been a major improvement in their writing, but we're still practicing on the strokes.
